Negotiated Moments: Improvisation, Sound, and Subjectivity

Dr. Ellen Waterman, is both a music scholar and a professional flutist specializing in creative improvisation and contemporary music.
Ellen has spent the last ten years performing and writing about improvisation, festivals and the chemistry of musical encounters. The upcoming book includes a chapter that addresses the dynamics of improvisation and identity through a series of conversations and explorations with Safa, a Persian-fusion ensemble consisting of Amir Khoushkani, Francois Houle and Sal Ferreras.
In this interview from Sonicology, Ellen speaks to Sal about his musical and improvisational experiences with Safa.
